About Me
Amelia Chan
With a deep-seated passion for mathematics and a wealth of experience in the field, I have devoted myself to the art of math education for many years. My journey began as a high school math tutor, where I honed my skills in both one-on-one and small group instruction, fostering a love of learning in my students.

After earning my degree, I ventured into the world of finance, holding roles as an Investment Banker, Financial Software Engineer, and Actuarial Consultant. However, the desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young learners never left me. As a parent, I made the decision to homeschool my own children and have had the privilege of creating personalized curriculum to match their unique abilities and needs. Through this experience, I have seen them excel academically. I am now eager to share my unique teaching experience with others. I am currently a Math Instructor at De Anza College in California.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, hiking, dancing Lindy Hop, and performing jazz singing at local venues.
My Story
Education
M.A. in Mathematics
from Columbia University, in New York

B.A. in Applied Mathematics
B.A. in Statistics
from the University of California, Berkeley.
I am truly fortunate to have been educated in both the Asian and Western education systems, allowing me to gain a unique perspective on the art of mathematics. Through rigorous practice and a conceptual understanding of the Asian approach to learning math, I have developed a deep understanding of the subject. At the same time, the Western education system has taught me to approach math with creativity, integrating different concepts and subject matters.
I believe that a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics and its beauty is far more valuable than rote memorization and computational speed. It is not only my goal to achieve academic excellence, but also my passion to instill a love of mathematics in my students by showing them its many different facets. I am eager to share my enthusiasm and knowledge with my students, helping them to see that mathematics can be interesting, beautiful, and useful."
Teaching Philosophy
My Work
I will help students to:

-
Comprehend basic concepts and solidify their foundational knowledge.
-
Link previously-learned mathematical knowledge to new concepts.
-
Explore and describe natural laws, make predictions, form conjectures, and reason logically.
-
Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
-
Understand mathematical concepts by using manipulatives, hands-on learning tools, games, and hands-on activities."
-
Prepare for standardized tests and AP exams.
Year after year, my students have achieved remarkable success. From National Merit Finalists to STEM majors in Ivy League and selective colleges, my students have excelled in both academics and math competitions. I have successfully helped many students skip grades by passing qualifying placement tests and even introduced the love of mathematics to students as young as kindergarteners. Every year, over 40% of my AP students receive a score of 5 in the AP Exams.

Though I specialize in working with mathematically gifted students, I am equally dedicated to helping those who may be struggling in math to not only catch up with their peers, but to develop a newfound appreciation and love for the subject. I strive to instill a deep understanding and passion for mathematics in all of my students, regardless of their starting level.
