AP Calculus AB

There are two options: one includes an optional live class component, where students must submit work each week, while the other is self-paced, allowing students to work at their own pace.

Application

Anyone interested in joining Ms. Chan’s AP® Calculus AB class should fill sign up and submit tuition to hold a spot.

Course Description

AP® Calculus AB is equivalent to a first-semester college calculus course. Topics include functions, limits and continuity, derivatives, and integrals. The course will focus on applying the skills and concepts of calculus to modeling and solving problems across multiple representations. It includes specific preparation for the AP® AB Calculus exam. Students will practice AP-style questions, to familiarize themselves with the format and grading techniques.

Who Should Apply?

Students should have successfully completed Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Precalculus or AP Precalculus. Students who have not completed Precalculus should enroll in  AP Precalculus or Honors Precalculus before taking this course. Students should understand linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric, and piecewise defined functions and know how to graph these functions and solve equations involving them. Students should also be familiar with algebraic transformations, combinations, compositions, and inverses for general functions. If unsure, one can take the diagnostic test.

Why Take This Class?

AP® Calculus AB is the equivalent of one semester of college Calculus and is typically taken by students pursuing majors in the social sciences, life sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences. With the elimination of the SAT Math Subject Test, many students take the AP® Calculus AB exam to validate the rigor of their math education. Calculus AB covers less material and moves at a slower pace than Calculus BC.

Course Fee

Early Bird Special: $679
After June 30: $739

Dorr Clark

Mr. Clark holds a B.S. in Mathematics and an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Santa Clara University. He was a mathematics and computer science instructor in the Graduate School of Engineering at Santa Clara University for 28 years. He brings decades of experience as a software engineer and is an expert in networking, with extensive industry experience and conference speaking engagements. After working as a software engineer, he chose to dedicate his time to teaching mathematics, technology, and debate to young students (www.clarksdebate.com). He has taught AP® Calculus to homeschooling students and has co taught summer math camps with Ms. Chan, making advanced mathematical ideas accessible through intuitive and exploratory learning. In addition to teaching, Mr. Clark has homeschooled his three now-adult children. and is the founding Debate Chair of the StoaUSA National Speech and Debate League, bringing an emphasis on logical reasoning and clear communication to his instruction.
